Trout Fly Fishing on the Lower Sac in Redding, CA

As we move into the latter half of February and especially March I begin to segue from Steelhead fishing to wild trout fly fishing.

There is no better wild trout river in all of CA than the big tailwater below Shasta Lake known as the Lower Sacramento River (Upper Sac is above Shasta Lake). The drift boat floatable section of the river begins near the Sundial Bridge in downtown Redding, CA and we commonly fish all the way to Anderson and even as far south as Red Bluff.

This giant tailwater river fishes all year around and harbors some of the best, most consistent fly fishing for big, wild, rainbow trout in the State. In addition to wild trout there are steelhead (both hatchery origin and wild) historically significant Chinook salmon (4 distinct runs of King Salmon) Striped Bass, American Shad, and other bass species are prevalent especially in the lower reaches in the valley.

The upper most reach is the “Sundial Bridge” area and it typically holds some of the largest trout in the river. This couple mile section of river (Sundial Bridge to Hwy 44 Bridge) will close on April 1st and re-opens August 1st… so March is a great time to fish this part of the river before the four month closure. And, again after August 1st when it reopens.

From April to August we focus on fishing from the Hwy 44 Bridge downriver and the sections between Anderson and Jelly’s Ferry are also popular.

I have a few dates open March 11, 12, 23, 26 if you want to check out this amazing wild trout river this spring season… contact me for more details.
