Summer Time Fly Fishing

Well, summer is firmly upon us. I watched the wild grasses growing on hillsides all around, Redding, CA go from Ireland green to sunbaked gold in the span of a few days. CA poppies were popping off in May and now are pretty much done blooming here in the valley.

We are beginning to see afternoon temps in the valley hit the 90’s and it’s time to “head up the hill” for cooler temps and new waters!

Fisheries such as McCloud, Pit River, Hat Creek and Fall River have been fishing great, most days… the Upper Sac is still a bit too high for many anglers, although if you know how/where to fish this tailwater/freestone it can be game on right now!!

I have been mostly fishing Fall River and a few days on the Lower Sac. Both are fishing very well… Our program will really focus on Fall River for the month of June and I am pretty much booked up for the month. Get a hold of me anyway if you want to fish b/c I can have cancellations from time to time.

Fall River has been on fire during May. It’s fishing very well with an abundance of fat wild trout from dinks to donkeys. We are seeing consistent pmd’s and other mayflies beginning in the morning and all afternoon - and this is the main attraction for fly anglers. Other good news is that the trout are really spreading out… they are not just concentrated in the upper river. This will spread out boats and angler pressure which leads to a more positive experience for everybody.

Late July and August I will return focus on the Lower Sac… I anticipate solid caddis hatches this summer based on how many bugs I am seeing currently. The summer caddis really drive the fishing on this river during summer months… also, ped’s and pmd’s, midges, and random little yellow stones and craneflies.

*Remember… The Lower Sac Sundial section re-opens on August 1st. I have the Aug 2-14 open currently along with many dates in mid to late July. Contact me soon to book these dates. They will book up as we get closer to those months.
