Steelhead Season and LSac Egg Bite…

Sorry it’s been a while since I have updated the fish report…

We have been on the Trinity River and Lower Sac mostly along with a few trips into N Eastern Shasta County in order to get away from the daily grind and hide from the crowds

(Fall River and Hat Creek can be amazing this time of year when the weather is hot in the valley).

October is a very popular month to fish in northern California. And I often ask myself does it really live up to all the hype?? It all just depends on who you ask and what you want in a fly fishing trip, I guess.

The cooler weather that fall season welcomes in is a MAJOR draw… but what about when it isn’t so cool and it’s actually hot & dry??

The “egg-bite” is fully underway on the LSac currently. *However, with the warmer and drier than normal conditions I do not believe it has really peaked just yet! A lot of salmon have spawned but there are many that are just hanging out (staging) waiting for better conditions.

The first rainy or cloudy day along with cooler weather will kick it into higher gear… as long as there are some salmon still left to spawn. I am seeing a lot of spent carcasses already. Many very, very large Chinook salmon this year.

As for steelhead fishing on both the Trinity and LSac… I ain’t gonna sugar coat it… it’s been tough! tougher than it should be. We are working for every hook up we get right now. The steelhead are definitely moving slow in both systems. Both rivers are also VERY clear and the Trinity is flowing at 300cfs now out of the dam, soooooo, yeah.

We could really use some RAIN right about now. It looks like we may just get a little in the 10-day forecast. Hopefully the upcoming change in weather/high pressure will usher in some storm fronts to begin hitting us here in N California.

C’mon El Niño whatya doin? Let’s goooooooo!!
