Steelhead Fishing Has Been Solid…

The 2024 Winter Steelhead Season is off to a fast and furious start on the upper Trinity River…

There is a good run of late-fall wild steelhead in the Trinity this year coming on the heels of a solid earlier fall-run stlhd (including the hatchery fish). So far January has been a lot of fun and we have been enjoying some higher, off-color water and lot’s of aggressive hookups each day.

Winter storms continue to pulse through the region almost weekly causing the river to rise and drop with good, green water conditions on many days. We will be fishing a big, full river the rest of the year now. I love fishing the Trinity in big water during the winter months and when we get some color in the water… it’s lights out!

We are mostly seeing rain during these storms and not much snowfall below 6k… and that would be my only “complaint”. We really DO need a better snowpack at this point of the season, especially in the Trinity Alps. Snowpack in the Alps is very important for this region and Trinity Lake is largely dependent on snow runoff in order to fill-up. Whereas, Shasta Lake will fill with winter rain events.

I am hoping both reservoirs fill to capacity this summer. Shasta Lake is almost a for sure… Trinity Lake is iffy unless things get colder and we get more snow in the Alps.

There is still a long way to go this winter and things are definitely off to a good start weather wise. And, though I appreciate not having to navigate snow and ice covered roads while towing my drift boat up & down and over mountain passes - it is a sacrifice I’m willing to make if Ma Nature wills it.

Bring on the snow… or rain… we’ll take what we get.

I still have a few open dates for February and March steelhead fishing on the Trinity River:

February 12-15 (*possible 16th) 20, 21, 26, 29

March 1, 4-8, 18-21, 25, 26 (also Lower Sac)
